Turmeric - The Golden Spice of India
I grew up with the golden splash of Turmeric all around me,
without realizing what an amazing spice it is. It took many years for
me to realize the incredible potential of turmeric as a healing herb.
After listening to my husband Dr. Bharat Aggarwal’s lecture in
which he scientifically proved that Curcumin the active ingredient
of Turmeric has a potential to cure cancer, I started pondering
over Turmeric and Indian Culture.
I realized that we used Turmeric daily to prepare our meals. It is
one of the most basic and important spice in the Indian Kitchen. In
fact the day some one got sick in the house and a simple meal of rice
and legume was prepared, we had to put salt and Turmeric in it. It
has tremendous healing properties for the sick and preventative
qualities for the healthy. Also when we prepare the Indian dishes,
turmeric is one of the most essential spice. It enhances other
spices. If you forget to put Turmeric, the other spices looses its
flavor and charm.
The other thing that happened in most of the Indian household is
that, when some one got sick with a cold, cough or sinus infection, he
was given Turmeric mixed with warm milk and soon the person felt
well. If someone got a cut or a bruise, or had aches and pains,
instead of reaching for the medicine cabinet, they reached for the
spice cabinet in the kitchen, to slap Turmeric on the wound or the
aching area, and before you knew it, the wound was healed, and the
aches and pains became history.
No marriage in India takes place without the presence of
Turmeric in the ceremonies. Brides and groom are adorned with
paste of Chickpeas flour, Turmeric and oil, to purify their skins and
this process gives a glow to their skins, right before their
marriage. That is not all; no religious ceremony is complete without
the graceful presence of golden Turmeric. All the “Tikka” red color
dot put on the forehead is made from Turmeric.
Many women including myself put Turmeric paste (mixed with other
ingredients) daily on the face to keep it clean and healthy without
blemishes.
All the ocher color cloths worn by monks and saints in India are
colored by Turmeric.
Turmeric is nature’s intelligence at its best. Eat it, use it and be
blessed by nature.
